Human Rights Advancement
LAKPESDAM NU Jombang seeks to develop programs that advance human rights, especially the rights of marginalised groups, through advocacy-based activities designed to promote a culture in which people monitor and report human rights violations. As part of this strategy, LAKPESDAM NU Jombang trains and educates NGO activists and its community basis in universal human rights and the legislative processes in place if human rights are violated. NGO activists and community groups are encouraged to scrutinise government policies via seminars, and through research and discussion groups.
Securing Gender Equality
LAKPESDAM NU Jombang seeks to develop programs that challenge prevailing patriarchal behaviours, processes and structures which undermine gender equality and institutionalise gender discrimination. LAKPESDAM NU Jombang seeks to cultivate awareness about gender rights and shape societal behaviours, thus advancing gender rights. In order to achieve this goal, LAKPESDAM Jombang engages in gender training, training in women’s rights and training in reproductive rights. It also engages in public campaigns which seek to increase awareness and apathy about the problem of domestic violence against women within society.
Democracy and Good Governance
LAKPESDAM NU Jombang pursues programs which actively encourage citizenry participation and promote accountability and transparency on the part of the local government, the private sector and civil society. LAKPESDAM NU Jombang believes this two-fold strategy is essential to the promotion and consolidation of democracy within Indonesia. It engages in community training in legislative advocacy, enhances leadership through training in good governance, undertakes organisational capacity-building with CSO and businesses, encourages the development of community-based networks and disseminates information pertaining to democracy and good governance through public campaigns and publications.
Religious Tolerance
Most Indonesian’s practice a moderate form of Islam, however there is a prevailing element within society whose interpretation of Islam may be described as ‘fundamentalist’. This interpretation of Islam is antithetical to social solidarity, and fosters a culture of intolerance, fear and violence. It is within this context, that LAKPESDAM NU Jombang promotes the strengthening of moderate Islamic organisations to respond appropriately to current development problems and to foster inter-religious understanding by engaging in inter-religious discourse. LAKPESDAM NU Jombang holds monthly inter-religious discussion groups within its office, facilitates inter-religious seminars with representatives from religious based NGO’s and other civil society groups in order to identify mechanisms and models for strengthening civil society, and it encourages a moderate interpretation of Islam by promoting the critical analysis of religious texts in light of the cultural context in which they were written.
Economic Security
LAKPESDAM NU Jombang seeks to ensure the economic rights of marginalised and impoverished groups by securing better community living standards. Its programs are designed to meet the short-term needs of marginalised and impoverished groups in areas like basic health and nutrition, as well as the longer-term needs of marginalised and impoverished groups through improved education, the provision of basic infrastructure and services, and so on. It engages in advocacy training and education designed to strengthen the capacity of the community to meet their basic needs and lobby the government for positive sustainable development changes, it offers micro-financing as well as training and support in business management, and it utilises the media to disseminate information and increase community pressure on the government to uphold the socio-economic rights of all its citizens.
